Congress demonstrates their collective half-wits.
The irrelevancy of the Obama presidency
“President Obama gave one of the most impassioned speeches of his presidency when he addressed Thursday night. Too bad so many in the audience thought it was a big, fat joke…”
Cassi Creek:
I must admit that I did not watch the President’s “jobs” speech last night. After a week of “leaks” and other teases from the White House, looking for voter response, there was little chance of surprise from Mr. Obama.
Every day we are treated to new polls claiming that the populace is less satisfied with the President’s job performance. In parallel, we also get polls documenting the still increasing levels of contempt for Congress, a performance rate of <20% for the “honorable members.” If those polls are even ballpark close, there should be a complete house cleaning in the House and a 1/3rd turnover in the Senate. I don’t doubt the Congressional approval numbers but don’t give the voter base much credit in knowing how to do their part of the governing process, either.
Since the dust-up over Obama’s speech began, there has been a steady parade of GOP/teavangelist Congressmen announcing their intent to not attend the joint session speech. They have chosen to announce their bigotry and their hatred of a duly elected incumbent President by behaving in a contemptuous manner. While this may impress the idiots that elected them, it is more about grabbing free PR time than anything to do with actual government. The much-publicized absences are petty acts of pseudo-defiance delivered from the safety of a political framework that allows them to act like small, spoiled, children and schoolyard bullies taunting and hiding behind adults, while incurring no penalty. They know that no one in their political party will demand that they behave as adults.
Even more despicable, the party leaders who attended last night behaved like middle school students who were required to attend a safe-sex lecture, giggling, laughing inappropriately, and using their “smart phones” to demonstrate how poorly they can behave when they are allowed to.
The very idea that members of Congress would sit in such an address and post such comments to their Twitter accounts is indicative of how far our political and social cultures have declined since the GOP initiated the “Contract on America” as a blueprint to over ride the election of Bill Clinton by any means possible. Gingrich wasted millions of dollars in needless investigations and an impeachment that was entirely about thwarting the will of the voters.
Now, the current GOP, subservient entirely to teavangelists and corporate interests is willing to destroy the country if it can first bring down Obama, for no other reasons but his race and his political party choice.
I should have watched or listened to the speech last night. I’m sure it would have been a disgusting performance to see.
Obama, 1st African-American POTUS, has allowed the GOP/teavangelists to spend two years doing all they can to destroy his presidency. I understand, somewhat, his need to appear above personal attacks. However, his entire term in office will be nothing but personal attacks. Rather than trying to ignore that fact and appear to be above the hate mongering; he needs to demonstrate his awareness and place the culprits, all of them, in the spotlight in order to preserve the dignity and power of his office.
As for the Congressmen and Senators who behaved so contemptibly last night, they need to be singled out for public contempt and ridicule. They have no valid excuse for such behavior. They may choose to twitter on their own time. When Congress is being paid by the public’s purse, I expect and demand that they put their toys away and behave like adults. Twitter merely offers them a platform to demonstrate their lack of any real wit or intellect.
As for me, with a few exceptions ( and certainly that does not include Phil Roe of Tennessee) I have little but contempt for a Congress that will destroy this nation and the world’s economy if they are not stopped by the remaining educated, rational, voters.
I hope the skies clear tonight. There’s a supernova I want to see show the world how science demonstrates its supremacy over myth.
