4 December 2009 Pearl Harbor Day – 3

Yesterday I heard an announcement for some television program dealing with the attack on Pearl Harbor. That event has always interested me so I listened a bit more closely.

The announcer described 7 December 1941 as “ the day WWII began.” Obvious, glaring, and not all that surprising an error.

Given the isolationism that marked the U.S. prior to WWII, and factor in the idiotic competitive athletics overlay that we tend to apply to any and everything; the “we’re number one!” chant that we hear all too often displays our national failure to mature as a nation or as a people.

While we entered WWII in December of 1941 the 2nd World War began much earlier. Germany attacked Poland in Sept 1939, initiating the war in Europe. This, of course ignores the invasion of Ethiopia by Italy in 1935, the Spanish Civil War in 1936, and the Japanese invasion of China in 1937.

The advertising spiel for the Pearl Harbor program was apparently written by someone with no real awareness of history. Given the inaccuracy of the ad, I believe I’ll skip the program.
