18 January 2012 Reconstruction in name only

 Preaching Division in South Carolina

Published: January 17, 2012
“By mixing falsehoods with racial condescension, Newt Gingrich brought a raucous presidential debate crowd to its feet on Monday night in South Carolina, further cheapening his reputation and that of the state Republican Party…”
Cassi Creek:  I recall all too well the murders of young people in Mississippi in the summer of 1964.  Two of them were summer volunteers, willing to help with voters’ registration of black citizens of Mississippi.  They were immediately classified as “outside agitators” and incurred the instant hatred of local residents.   The third was a native Mississippian, guilty of hoping to elevate his self and other black citizens above the nearly feudal, disenfranchised status imposed upon them by the white power structure.  His attempt to better his lives, and that of others to help him carried a death sentence as certainly, as if they had been tried and convicted in open court.
http://www.core-online.org/History/freedom_summer.htm  will provide some background information.  Please read it if you are too young to recall the actual events of that summer.
This is the history that has fueled the hatred of Obama since his election as POTUS.  This is the anger caused by the refusal of whites to regard African – American men and women as equal under the law, as deserving of equal opportunity in jobs, education, housing, and healthcare.  This is the separation of our citizens from each other fueled by Nixon’s southern strategy, by Reagan’s fictitious “welfare queen” campaign lies.  This is the animosity underlying the campaign lies spread by Palin and others about young women having children outside of marriage in order to obtain more “welfare” money.  This is the history that causes whites to view liberation theology in black churches as anti-American communism while listening to hate mongers lie about plans by Muslim Americans to destroy the nation.  These are the things men and women of honor and integrity, citizens with functional intellects have tried to remove from our society, our culture, and our legal system.   These are the old hatreds and ingrained bigotries that most of us know to be lies and stupidity.
This is the history that Gingrich is trying to bring back to the surface as he and Santorum trade bigotry for dogma in South Carolina.  This is the hatefulness Gingrich hopes to reignite with his “food stamp President” label.  This is the prejudice he wants to stir up about birth rates, marriage rates, and the fear that someone else might get a penny of tax money paid to the federal government.  This is the hatred that drives the phrase and dogma of “states rights.”
This is the hatred sponsored and spread by Reagan, Palin, Santorum, Perry, Gingrich, Robertson, and countless politicians at every level who have nothing but fear and hatred to peddle to uneducated, out of work, fearful, impoverished citizens who think backward to when they believed they were better off than black citizens because they had drinking fountains with their race on them.
I recall too well that brutal summer of 1964 and I am horrified, not at what happened then, but at how little progress we’ve actually made since then.

17 January 2012 0421 Not even 0 dark-30

That is exactly the time something snapped me from sleep to bitter, resistant awareness.  Measuring pain levels and the amount of sinus congestion, I knew there was no chance of getting back to sleep.
I got up, checked the stove, retrieved the newspaper as well as the replacement for yesterday’s missed delivery.
Gloria had blood draws to be done this morning.  I drove her to Greeneville and we both waited an hour for the office to draw her labs.  Following that we bought gasoline, and went out for what we had expected to be an 0900 breakfast rather than a 1030 brunch.
Tonight is the Adult Jeopardy on line exam.  I had hoped to, like Arlo, “be my best.”  However, with almost no sleep, far too much caffeine, and a left hand that is decidedly less responsive and dexterous than its opposite, I’m not overly confident in my ability to wrangle an invitation for further testing.
Still, I like to believe I’m capable of playing and winning Jeopardy if the mix is not all sports and opera.  So when the curtain goes up on my notebook and the music begins, I’ll be glued to the exam.  You’ll most likely hear me as I scream out my last answer, “That Russian woman, Fukifinova!”

16 January 2012 Where’d that reef come from?

Disaster at sea: Luxury cruise turns into nightmare
By Ashley Hayes and Dan Rivers, CNN
updated 11:03 AM EST, Mon January 16, 2012

There have already been too many comparisons to the sinking of the Titanic.  The loss of life resulting from the unintentional grounding of the Costa Concordia is negligible unless one of those lives is of your family.  As maritime disasters run, this is not likely to spawn a folk song/pro-war song (Reuben James), a protest song (Fair the well, Titanic), or a stage play/movie ( Night To Remember).  A cheap budget, direct to DVD video may surface (Thresher, Kursk)
The photos and video show the massive ship laid over on its starboard side with much of the upper decks superstructure submerged.   There is an immense gash in the hull beneath the normal waterline.  Looking at the degree of list, it is easy to project the ship turning turtle if the ship had been in only slightly deeper water.
The reef that apparently sank the ship is clearly visible above the calm waters.  The Italian coast guard says the charts of the area plainly mark the hazard.  The cruise line is already throwing the captain to the sharks – light of his rapid departure for dry land, leaving his passengers and crew alone in the dark – quite appropriate.
If the ship was navigating with paper charts, the reported power failure should not have mattered.  If there was a GPS/INS/auto chart system in use, a power failure may have led to erroneous recalibration.  However, that should have automatically been checked against paper charts to verify position and direction of travel.
The port side lifeboats became useless as the list brought them above the length of deployable cable; the starboard side boats may well have been carried below the side of the hull.  It will be interesting to see what changes in maritime law and safety provisions evolve from this shipwreck.
It is certain that there were multiple human errors resulting in injury, loss of life, and of property.  It will also be interesting to see how salvage is carried out, and by whom.  There should be some great bargains for cruises between now and the end of spring.

15 January 2012 There is no limit to mean or stupid.

Romney parle français,  亨斯迈说中文 (Huntsman speaks Chinese).

The stupidest attack on Mitt Romney yet, pardon my French
Gingrich has the temerity to attack Romney for learning a foreign language.  The thrust of this ad is to separate Romney from the bulk of the teavangelist base.

Gingrich: Romney Speaks French, Just like John Kerry

Gingrich may have learned French as well in order to research his dissertation due to the fact that his doctorial dissertation on education in the Belgium Congo cites numerous French languagedocuments. Gingrich also interviewed a number of people in Belgium. French is one of the major languages in that country.
One supposes that Gingrich could have employed a translator, thus escaping the taint of being fluent in the French language. One wonders what the fuss is about, however.
Cassi Creek:         I have no understanding of  the current hatred of the French people, language, or politics.  I studied French for two years in high school in order to meet collegiate entry requirements.  I chose French over Spanish because of the many contributions French citizens have made to science, agriculture, music, and literature.  My French language accomplishments are now mostly buried along with other non-technical/scientific facts retained from high school and college classes.  I actually did use a bit of it in VietNam.
Even VietNamese peasants had more second and third language skills than most Americans of that period, who have no exposure to any foreign language other than the brand of English they believe Jesus used to dictate the King James Bible.
The 60’s and 70’s were still a time when education was valued and when we approved of political candidates who were smarter than the average voter. For some reason, since the space race and cold war ended we want our politicians to forego upper level education and to appear as dumb as the 8th grade dropouts who fail to understand why they can’t find a job.
Reagan presided over the initial dumbing down as he fed the public one lie after another written by his handlers for his owners.  George W Bush presented with the barely literate personae that grew in popularity and spawned the barely literate Palin quasi-candidacy that prove Palin had no final goal beyond fleecing those supporters who had already purchased authentic autographed pictures of Jesus from some televangelist and now were willing to purchase Palin’s books.
Now we’ve come to Gingrich, who is quite willing to criticize any amount of education and anyone who has passing acquaintance with grammar.  He’s trying to link Romney to John Kerry and to further drive a wedge between the southern red states and the northern blue states.  He’s quite willing to re-open the Civil War.  One would think that a “history professor” would recall what a disaster that visited upon the nation.  Gingrich seems to have missed that class.

How the West should answer Iran’s nuclear aggression
By Ray Takeyh, Published: January 13
Ray Takeyh is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.
The perennial conflict between Iran and the West has entered a dangerous new phase, with tensions rising in the Persian Gulf since Iran has threatened retaliation for last week’sassassination of a chemical engineer linked to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. What accounts for Iran’s behavior? Behind all the sound and fury, Tehran is diligently pursuing a three-track policy that involves provocation of the international community and making noises about diplomacy as it relentlessly marches toward the bomb…”

Cassi Creek:  The march to armed conflict with Iran seems focused upon an ever-tightening belt of weaponry, need to maintain sea-lanes, and election year posturing and realities on our part; opposing a similar set-up of weaponry, religious fanaticism, and millenniums-old anger at loosing the wars with ancient Greece, setting the east and west on divergent paths toward civilization.
The Iranian resentment at not being regarded by the West as a world power is displayed in their propaganda and public pronouncements.  However, they should look at their present situation and realize that only oil and location makes them of any interest to any other nation, or any other group of Westerners except Christian missionaries.
Rather than drop bombs on Iran, I’d drop missionaries, dealing with two sets of religious fanatics at once.

“The real battle for the soul of America
By Ruth Marcus, Published: January 12
“Mitt Romney likes to say that this election is a battle for “the soul of America.” He’s right — just not in the way that he thinks.
“Romney asserts that President Obama wants to “fundamentally transform America,” turning the country “into a European-style entitlement society.” In fact, Romney and his Republican presidential rivals have a far more radical transformation in mind. They envision a dramatically shrunken federal government and a dangerously unraveled social safety net…”
Cassi Creek:  We’re going to be screwed by the GOP/teavangelists/theocons once again.  They’re going to finish outsourcing every possible job to their sweatshops/factories in the third world.  They’re going to use the same strategy that has worked so well since Nixon’s southern strategy, inflaming the working class voters who once had jobs and belonged to unions by coaxing them into voting yet again for the lackeys of the people who shipped their jobs offshore and who own the financial houses that foreclosed on their homes.   Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and unemployment insurance benefits are all in the sights to be blown out of the present world by men who want to roll the calendar back to the days when Vanderbilts, Rockerfellers, and other robber barons traveled by private rail car on railroads they owned.
The people talking most loudly about the “soul of America” are the people who want to own that soul and the soul of everyone who can be convinced to listen to them.  They will happily equate social safety nets with “European socialism” and ignore the massive amounts of money being stripped from the pockets of working class by the religious charlatans who were fed evangelical Christianity from birth by the corporate churches and the robber barons who own them.
There may be some hope this year that the working class will realize that they are voting for their own destruction.  If the GOP candidates continue to shred each other publically, they may provide the working class and the former middle class with enough incentive to look beyond the church pews and the AM talk radio jocks.   We can only hope.

Also of deep concern, the behavior of our troops in Afghanistan.

We don’t support the Geneva Accords to make the enemy happy.  We support and enforce their criteria for behavior on and around battlefields for the safety and proper treatment of our troops if they are captured, if they are wounded and captured, and if they are killed and their remains fall into enemy hands.  While the Taliban irregulars are not members of a uniformed force, it is in our best interest to treat them as if they are, either alive or dead.
I have no trouble knowing how I would respond to images of Americans KIA being treated as we have done the irregulars in the now famous images.  Therefore, I have no difficulty knowing how the families, friends, and squad mates of those Taliban are responding to the pictures.
There is no acceptable excuse for the actions of our Marines.    They have made it much less likely that our troops, if captured, will be treated appropriately.   If I were one of them facing capture, I’d save the last bullet for myself.

12 January 2012 5 million dollars to buy South Carolina How much to stop people spitting?

Kamikaze Gingrich, on the loose in South Carolina
By Dana Milbank, Published: January 11
“As Republican leaders watch with horror Newt Gingrich’s one-man campaign to bring down the party’s likely presidential nominee, they should remind themselves of this: Gingrich is a monster of their own making…
“… there are 5 million reasons Republicans have to fear Gingrich. That’s the number of dollars billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson gave to a pro-Gingrich super PAC— the largest contribution to a candidate’s cause in U.S. history. This allowed the Winning our Future PAC to buy $3.4 million worth of ads in South Carolina — enough to saturate the state with poisonous messages about Mitt Romney…
“…Liberals have complained for two years about the Supreme Court’s Citizens Uniteddecision, which made such unlimited contributions possible. But Republicans on Capitol Hill resisted attempts to limit the damage of the decision — and now Gingrich is teaching them the consequences of their own actions.
“… Romney, on his way to South Carolina, complained explicitly that Gingrich was against “free enterprise.”
“Romney has it wrong. Gingrich’s attacks on him are the very essence of free enterprise: They’re helped by campaign finance laws that sell elections to the highest bidder. For those Republicans who thought that unlimited political contributions would be a good thing for their party, it’s a delicious irony that a casino billionaire is using his money to underwrite a populist assault on the GOP front-runner.”

Global Health Advertisements & PSAs - TB
After Villemin and Koch’s discovery that tuberculosis was contagious through the tubercle bacilli in sputum, The National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis (NASPT) began their Anti-Spitting Campaign to discourage such behaviors as public spitting. The NASPT, co-founded in 1904 by over 200 of the most prominent medical men in America, was a voluntary organization formed to unify and expand the country’s regional anti-tuberculosis programs. TB was the number one cause of death in the United States during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and one of the most feared diseases in the world. In an effort to control this health risk, the campaign encouraged towns to outlaw spitting in the streets and on the floors of shops, theaters, taverns, or any public gathering spots. Women refused to wear long dresses into town for fear they may pick up the disease and bring it home with them. Any handkerchief or piece of belonging that was infected was burned, and spittoons were disinfected with carbolic acid and boiling water. By 1915, the NASPT involved children in the campaign, encouraging the Modern Health Crusade, which developed into the new health education system for elementary schools.

Cassi Creek:         The subject of drug-resistant tuberculosis was broached on a forum I follow.  As much as I would like to rid the world of Gingrich, I’d like to see TB eliminated even more.  The corporations masquerading as persons in order to buy elections and place puppets into state and national legislative bodies could do quite a lot of good if they chose to apply their wealth to defeating disease.
Prior to the evolution of HIV/AIDS and excepting malaria, Tuberculosis was one of the most prevalent causes of preventable death in the modern world.  As I grew up in the 1950s, Polio was largely beaten back by vaccination, small pox was officially eliminated, and malaria somewhat subdued by DDT.  TB was widely feared when I began school.  Anti-spitting ads were still prominently displayed and there was moderate public compliance with anti-spitting campaigns.  TB was incurable then and resistant strains have potentially erased the advances in treatment in many locations around the world.
I was taught, growing up that spitting was repulsive and not something done by polite and/or educated people.  The association between spitting and disease was easy to draw then and should be even easier to draw now.  Somehow, that association has broken down and spitting has become common behavior, particularly in young males.  It is time to revamp the campaign against spitting, time to remind people that it helps to spread TB.
Contact any corporate impersonator you can locate and demand that they stop buying elections and start funding anti-spitting campaigns.  Boycotts are indicated.  Targeting middle and high school students is essential. There is nothing “cool” about dying of tuberculosis.
